Chatham County has a system of 12 collection centers with locations throughout the county for the disposal of residential garbage and recyclables. Hours of operation vary slightly with four centers open seven days a week and nine centers closed on Wednesday. All of our collection centers are staffed through a contract with a security service.
Current
decals
are required on vehicles in
order to use the collection
centers. Issuance of
decals is based on payment of
Chatham County Solid Waste Fees.
Residents of Chatham County must
pay the Solid Waste Fees and
display a current decal in order
to use any of the twelve
collection centers.
The County
Material Acceptance Policy
prohibits businesses and
out-of-county residents from using
the collection centers. This
policy also restricts the amount
that residential users can bring to
any center in a seven-day period. |
The Chatham County Collection Centers offer numerous recycling and waste reduction opportunities. We collect most
common recyclables as well as some other less common items such as motor oil, tires, auto batteries, and scrap metal. The staff person at your center will help answer your recycling questions and can give you brochures and literature.
The large green container in the center is the garbage compactor. This compactor system helps minimize odor and increases the amount of garbage we can haul per trip. There is a separate container for large bulky items such as mattresses. There are also pre-crushers at the Cole Park and Pittsboro centers that can handle most large bulky items.
Once a compactor, pre-crusher or bulky bin is full, your garbage is hauled to one of two privately owned transfer stations in Siler City or Sanford where we pay a tipping fee to dispose of it. Your garbage then gets loaded onto a truck and makes the trip to a state approved landfill in Sampson County over 80 miles away.
Another waste reduction program at all 12 centers are the Swap Shops. This program was established to promote the reuse
of items that you no longer want, but someone else may need. You can leave (and find) such things as clothing, books, toys, furniture, household goods, etc. Swap Shops were created as a waste reduction project and are not intended to be for charity (however we recognize that many needy people benefit from the reuse of items). Rules are posted for how often and long you can stay at the Swap Shops.
