Recyclables
Collection Centers Accept the Following Materials:

FOR RECYCLING:
Glass Bottles
Clear, green, brown bottles and jars only - remove lids and rinse
Don’t include:  ceramics, Pyrex, window or windshield glass, mirror glass, light bulbs, or drinking glasses

Steel Food Cans
All metal food cans and empty paint cans - rinse well

Corrugated Cardboard & Brown Paper Bags
Must have 3 layers with wavy middle layer - break down boxes and flatten
Don’t include: waxy cardboard, pizza boxes, or paperboard boxes

Large Appliances and Scrap Metal
Refrigerators, stoves, air conditioners, swing sets, lawn mowers, tin roofing, etc.
Don’t include: televisions, microwaves, barrels, drums, gas/propane tanks, pails, plastics

Car Batteries
Wet cell only
Don’t include: household batteries

Tires (must sign in with guard)
Automobile tires with holes less than 20" across with no rims - four tires per individual per six month period

Motor Oil
Motor oil, transmission fluid, kerosene, gear oil, Coleman® fuel, diesel fuel
Don’t include: antifreeze, gasoline, solvents, mixed gas, parts cleaner, or paint thinner

Aluminum Cans
Beverage, pet food, etc. - rinse and crush cans

HDPE #2 Plastic Milk Jugs and Water Bottles and #1 PET Bottles - discard lids, rinse, and flatten
Do not include: other types of plastic containers - NO other # 2 colored plastics including bleach & liquid laundry detergent

Must be a #1 bottle: soda, shampoo, etc. (has a neck, not a tub or plate) - discard lids, rinse, and flatten
NO other types of plastic, plastic bags, milk jugs, bottles that contained motor oil or other hazardous materials

Newspaper
Inserts okay - must be clean and dry
Do not include: magazines, other types of paper, bags, string

Mixed Paper

  • paperboard (cereal boxes, 6-pack cartons, detergent boxes)
  • colored paper, junk mail
  • paper packaging (minus plastic and metal components)
  • paper back books
  • pet food bags (take out the waxed paper or plastic liner)
  • phone books
  • white copy paper, computer paper, notebook paper

NO foil type paper, food contaminated paper, plastic bags, waxed paper, pizza boxes, juice boxes, metal or plastic spouts or handles
Recycle separately: glossy magazines/catalogs, newspaper, brown paper bags, corrugated cardboard

Magazines & Glossy Catalogs
all pages must be glossy
NO "T.V. Guides", dull-finish pages, telephone books, junk mail, mixed paper

FOR REUSE:
Swap Shop
The collection center provides an area where you can bring items that you no longer need but are too good to throw away. Others can then reuse these items.

Grazing Card Program
Chatham County issues "Grazing Cards" to promote the safe reuse of materials at our collection centers. The "Grazing Card" is a privilege offered to Chatham County residents for a small administrative fee of $10.00 so that they can reuse useful items that are placed in the Scrap Metal/Appliance and Bulky bins. Grazing cards are available at the County Waste Management facilities. Call 542-5516 for more details.

MATERIALS NOT ACCEPTED:

  • agricultural chemicals
  • asbestos
  • garbage collected as part of a community cleanup (call 542-5516 to request permission for free disposal at the Siler City Transfer Station)
  • rocks, earth, stumps*
  • land clearing debris*
  • masonry products*
  • firewood*
  • concrete, concrete blocks, bricks, stone*
  • yard waste - including limbs, leaves, grass*
  • gasoline**
  • varsol or solvents of any type**
  • herbicides, pesticides, or the discarded containers of such**
  • radiator coolant**
  • unhardened paint, paint thinner**
