Chatham County has a 24-hour Illegal Dumping Hotline, 542-0502.  You can leave a message to report illegal dumping of garbage, tires, appliances or unauthorized use of dumpster anytime by calling that number.  Our Environmental Enforcement Officer will respond to your complaint.  For best results when reporting littering, please include a vehicle license plate number if possible.

Other duties of Environmental Enforcement include:
  • Support and enforcement of policies at collection centers
  • Management of permitting process for private haulers
  • Management of church participation program at collection centers
  • Education and outreach through civic groups, schools, and churches
  • Organization of community clean-up projects
  • Management of community service projects through Adult Probation Community Service Work Program

  • Illegal burning – Fire Marshal at 542-8259
  • Suspicious chemicals – Emergency 911
  • Junk yards – Planning at 542-8285
  • Illegal signs – Planning at 542-8285
  • Well & septic issues – Environmental Health at 542-8208
  • Dead animals on roadside – DOT at 742-3431
